Paolo Demaria Guaitamacchi
was born in London in 1956 to Italian parents and comes from a family
where all of its members are unusually
artistic. His father, Bruno, was an accomplished oil painter, and
his mother, Magda, is a much-celebrated ceramicist. Both his parents
have exhibited internationally, as have Paolo’s two younger
brothers, Luca and Jonathan, who are also successful, reputable painters.
Paolo began his formal artistic studies at the “Accademia delle
Belle Arti di Brera” in Milan, Italy at age 16. He later left
Brera to study under the guidance of his father, Bruno, who became
a type of “master” to Paolo over the next few years as
they shared painting experiences in England and Italy.
Always earning his living through his painting, Paolo began selling
his first pieces at the age of 16 at the “Galleria Bolzani” which
was at the time the most prominent traditional fine art gallery in
the high fashion district of Milan. Later, working with the art dealer
Gian Franco Pacini, Paolo was also able to sell and exhibit his paintings
in Venice, Verona, and on Lake Garda in Italy where Pacini was based.
In Europe, Paolo has exhibited and sold his work regularly at the “Highgate
Fine Art Gallery” in London and the “Ritrovo Gallery” in
Milan since the 1990’s and is also represented by the “Valentinarte
Gallery” in Bellagio and the “Centro D’Arte Gallery” in
Gorgonzola, which are also located in Italy. In addition, Paolo displays
and sells his paintings at his personal galleries in Bellagio and
Varenna, on the beautiful Lake Como.
One man and collective exhibitions have been held over the years
in art galleries, historical sites, theatres, fine hotels, and churches,
including the following:
Dentro Culturale Rosetum--Milan, Italy
Centro D’Arte Gallery--Gorgonzola, Italy
Chiesa Bianca—St. Moritz, Switzerland
Galleria Ca D’Oro—Vincenza, Italy
Galleria Incontro—Verona, Italy
Gallery 34—Skipton/Yorkshire, England
Highgate Fine Art Gallery—London, England
La Galleria—Stuttgart, Germany
Ritrovo Gallery—Milan, Italy
Teatro Sociale—Canzo, Italy
The Continental Hotel—Sirmione del Garda, Italy
Valentinarte Gallery—Bellagio, Italy
While Paolo has experience in portraying the human figure in interiors, his most
renowned forte is with landscapes and still-lifes. He commits himself to the “plein
air” style of painting, much used by the early impressionist painters where
subjects are always painted “on the spot” in their natural settings.
This allows the artist to reflect the naturally occurring changes of light, colour
and mood. In order the achieve the best results possible, Paolo insists on using
the world’s finest oil paints and Belgian linen canvases available.
Paolo has traditionally focused on painting in Italy, England, France and Switzerland.
However, he has traveled in recent years to Chicago, Arizona, and Kyoto, Japan
where he has been able to apply his techniques to a variety of new land/sea and
cityscapes with exciting results. This recent traveling reflects Paul’s
ongoing desire to expand further as an artist by seeking to balance a commitment
to the “traditions” of the style of his work, while pursuing the
challenges that come with painting fresh subjects in new settings.
